Tour Championship Preview

by | Aug 24, 2022 | Golf

Another terrific session last week. The selections brought in a very healthy 12.8-point profit. That’s a total profit of 40.5 points on the year. Hopefully some of you have shared in those spoils.

Right, on to this week. The big finale is here. The current PGA tour season comes to an end in East Lake, with the prize of the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup on offer. Scottie Scheffler comes into the tournament as the number one seed and therefore starts on the maximum -10. Patrick Cantlay is starting on -8 and Xander Schauffele is starting on -6, with the rest of the starting scores listed below. Will Zalatoris was supposed to start on -7 but has withdrawn with a nasty enough back injury.

  • -10: Scottie Scheffler
  • -8: Patrick Cantlay
  • -6: Xander Schauffele
  • -5: Sam Burns
  • -4: Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Sepp Straka, Sungjae Im
  • -3: Jon Rahm, Scott Stallings, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Matthew Fitzpatrick
  • -2: Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Joaquin Niemann, Viktor Hovland
  • -1: Collin Morikawa, Billy Horschel, Tom Hoge, Corey Conners, Brian Harman
  • Even Par: KH. Lee, J.T. Poston, Sahith Theegala, Adam Scott, Aaron Wise

2018 & Before – Notes:

Tiger won the Tour Championship in 2018 with a score of -11, but in the old format, Justin Rose took home the FedEx Cup. McIlroy, Thomas and Schauffele all finished on -5 (275) for the tournament, with Rahm back on -4. In 2017, Justin Thomas won the FedEx Cup, finishing second in East Lake with a score 0f -11 (269). Schauffele won the Tour Championship in 2017 with a score of -12(268).

Schauffele has been absolutely dominant, scoring wise, in East Lake. He is consistently amongst the lowest total scores and has a competition win under his belt as well. This year’s -6 is his best starting point, so he has to be one of my selections for the Chip.

FedEx Cup Performances in 2022 (FedEx St. Jude & BMW Championship)

  • Scottie Scheffler: T3, MC
  • Patrick Cantlay: WIN, T57
  • Xander Schauffele: T3, T57
  • Sam Burns: T19, T20
  • Rory McIlroy: MC, T8
  • Cam Smith: DNS, T13
  • Tony Finau: T28, T5
  • Sebb Straka: T28, 2nd
  • Justin Thomas: T52, T13
  • Jon Rahm: T8, T5

Selections:

This is so tough to call. Scheffler has had a truly dominant season and giving him a head start is huge. Schauffele has also had one of his best seasons ever and has clear form at East Lake. It is likely between the top three, but I think Rahm and Sebb Straka are a bit of value as well. Straka is starting on -4 but is 125/1 in places!

Xander Schauffele – 13/2: 1.5 points EW

I feel he is a little bit better value than Scheffler for the straight up win. I think Cantlay was actually kind of lucky to win last week. He got the bounce of the ball in the last couple of holes.

Sebb Straka – 125/1:  0.75 points EW

Crazy odds for someone currently sitting in T5.

Jon Rahm – 16/1: 1 point EW

Fuck it. It’s the last competition of the season.
