GAME PREVIEW:

We are so back! Entering the 2023 season with a healthy profit, which is always a nice way to start. And what a game to kick things off with. The newly energized Detroit Lions, who won eight of their last ten games last year, are facing off against the Super Bowl-winning powerhouse, the Kansas City Chiefs. The points total is high on this one, so hopefully, that is a sign of positive things to come.

Looking at the keys to the game, we can’t start anywhere else other than with the guys who are or might be missing from the Chiefs’ lineup. Chris Jones, the Chiefs’ star DT, is currently in a holdout, looking for a new contract, and is therefore missing in action. Their best defensive player and solid run-stopper is a huge missing piece when going up against one of the best offensive lines in football and an overall strong running attack. The other missing piece, who is questionable for Thursday’s opener, is Kelce. Kelce hyperextended his knee in practice and has a lot of swelling, hence his uncertain status. There is still a chance he will play, but he won’t be at full strength. The good news for Kansas is that Mahomes has yet to lose an opener.

When looking at the Detroit Lions, you would have to say that they are an overall better unit heading into 2023. New defensive additions like CJ Gardner-Johnson will no doubt help improve one of the worst defensive teams in football in 2022. A new RB room in the form of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery brings uncertainty, but not enough to worry me going into this game. We are still waiting to see Jameson Williams in proper action, and we won’t for a while, as he is missing the first six games due to suspension (gambling at the team facility).

The Detroit Lions have started slow the last couple of years, but I think they will put up a fight against the defending champs in this game. I’m not sure if they will win it, but I like them to keep it within the 4.5 spread. All picks are below.

Overall, these are two strong offensive teams, with some questionability on the other side of the ball. I would love to see the points get high on this one, but opening games can be funny sometimes. Kansas love keeping it within the spread too, hence the Lions on the handicap selection. Everything else looks standard enough on this one, so sit back and enjoy what looks to be a decent one to start.

PICKS:

  • Lions +4.5: 1 point @10/11.
  • Isiah Pacheco over 51.5 rushing yards: 1 point @20/23. One of the worst rushing defences last year and with Kelce probably out, they might look to pound that rock a little more.
