LIV Golf Update

The PGA Tour and DP World Tour are in big big trouble.

I decided to watch all three golf events on at the weekend and LIV certainly caught my eye. They are putting on a show and it seems like it will only get better with time. It still has a way to go to supersede the PGA Tour, but here are some of the key things that I think are working in its favour.

– The team event is seriously enjoyable for both players and viewers. Two scores to count on the first two days and three on the last means every player has something to play for going into the final round with a $3m payout for the winning team.

– It is starting to draw even more of the best players and with Stenson winning the $4m purse in his first event, it’s only going to get tougher for the main tours to hold on to their players.

– The money is obscene. DJ took home $1.8m for tied 2nd while the third place finisher in the DP world tour event took home €109K. Roughly the same as the last place finisher in the LIV event…The DP tour should be ashamed.

– The end of season event means even more money on offer with the leading individual golfer taking home an additional $18m, with the leading team sharing $16m.

– The players and patrons are having more fun. The tunes were blaring throughout the course yesterday, with the tournament sounding more like a festival. The players also attend a swanky launch event before the each tournament, which will only add to the social aspect and fun side of things.

Say what your want about how it is being funded and how Greg Norman is leading the organisation, but if the main tours don’t do something quick, they are in real jeopardy of developing and maintaining a sustainable future.
